2005 Autumn in Kansai - Kyoto
Sanjusangen-do Temple
Inside the main hall, there are 1001 wooden statues of Kannon (the Buddhist goddess of mercy). The chief image is the 100-armed Senju-Kannon, flanked on either side by 500 smaller images, neatly lined in rows. (photograph inside is not allowed)
The temple’s name refers to the 33 bays between the pillars of this long, narrow building.
