Denmark - Roskilde & Copenhagen

Today we visit the Roskilde. It takes about 20 minutes from the Central Train Station to Roskilde Station.

Beautiful flowers are everywhere.

The Roskilde Cathedral is in the center of the town. Eversince the early Middle Ages, Roskilde Cathedral has been one of Denmark's most outstanding churches. At least two churches have preceded the present cathedral on the very same site. The present one is one of the earliest examples of French-inspired, Gothic brick architecture. In 1995, the Cathedral was added to UNESCO's list of the world's most precious cultural assets.


We then have lunch at the square.


Walking through the park to the Viking museum, we pass the yellow flower field with its strong smell.


Outside of the Viking museum. But we are too lazy to want to see inside and finally take the bus back to the station.

Back to the Copenhagen, we decide to see whether today is the national holiday and stores are opened or not.

Denmark - Copenhagen

There are only 6 of the gang that would like to extend the trip 2 more days. Since the weather forecast for today is raining and cloudy. We decide to see only Copenhagen.

We also do the window shopping at this watch store.

Then we walk through the Stroget, the longest walking street in Europe.

There are a lot of stalls around the Kongens Nytorv square.


So we decide to have lunch here. I share the champignon soup with the pork filet sandwich with Mi.

The french-designed equestrian statue of King Christian V in the centre, erected in 1688, original in lead, was recast in bronze in 1946.

We then buy the DFDS Canal Tours (DMK 60 per person per hour) at Nyhavn.

Finally the Tivoli, one of the "must see" attractions of Denmark.












Then we go back to the Astor Hotel where Khun Bundit will cook for us tonight. A very delicious dinner, especially the fried crispy pork belly with sweet strawberry and Icecreme as dessert.

Denmark - Copenhagen

Khun Sivaporn and Khun Rochana kindly arrange the Iceland trip for us. We stop by at Copenhagen to connect the flight to Iceland, waiting for the flight in the afternoon. We visit some Copenhagen's landmark.


Amalienborg Palace
"Amalienborg Palace, the royal couple's winter residence, is a major architectural work and probably the most outstanding piece of Rococo architecture in Denmark.

Amalienborg comprises four palaces and was originally conceived as town mansions for families of the nobility at the beginning of the 1750's. In 1794, after the fire at Christiansborg Castle, the mansions came into the possession of the Royal Family. At Amalienborg Palace the Royal Guard is on duty for 24 hours. The relief takes place every day at 12 o'clock noon."

"In 1909 Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen ordered sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create a statue of The Little Mermaid. It was presented to the City of Copenhagen on 23 August 1913.

The Little Mermaid has had a very turbulent life with vandalism, violation and even decapitation. But she is a tough old lady and has survived numerous attacks during her long life. The statue at Langelinie is actually a copy of the original statue. The real one is in the safe possesion of sculptor Edvard Eriksen's heirs. In addition there is a copy in the Danish enclave Solvang in California, USA, and a similar statue (Girl in a wetsuit) inspired by The Little Mermaid in Vancouver, Canada. "

"The fountain was donated to the city of Copenhagen by the Carlsberg Foundation on the occasion of the brewery’s 50-year anniversary. It was originally supposed to be located in the main town square outside city hall, but it was decided instead to build it near the Øresund in its current location near Kastellet ("The Citadel")."
It was designed by Danish artist Anders Bundgaard, who sculpted the naturalistic figures 1897-99. The basins and decorations were completed in 1908. The fountain was first activated on July 14, 1908.
