Jiuzhaigou Day 1 - Sichuan Province, China

Our gang of four starts touring Jiuzhaigou National Park.

Located in the north of Sichuan Province, Jiuzhaigou County (previously known as Nanping County until being renamed in 1998) is part of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. It is 450 kilometers (about 280 miles) to the north of Chengdu City. Its name is due to the existence of nine stockaded villages of Tibetan origin, and it is always regarded as a holy mountain and watercourse by the Tibetan people. Jiuzhaigou Valley covers altitudes ranging from 2,000 meters (656,168 feet) to about 4,300 meters (14,107,612 feet) with its large number of lake groups, waterfalls and rich variety of endangered plants and fauna.

Huanglong - Sichuan Province, China

The Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area is located in Songpan County, in the northwest part of Sichuan Province and encompasses the Huanglong and Muni Valley. Huanglong's major scenery is concentrated in the 3.6-kilometer (2.2 miles) long Huanglong Valley that includes snow-clad peaks and the easternmost glaciers in China. Due to its layered calcium carbonated deposit patterns, the valley resembles a golden dragon winding its way through the virgin forest, stone mountains and glaciers. Along the valley are scattering numerous colorful ponds of different sizes and shapes, which are strewn with gold colored limestone deposit giving a shimmering golden hue to water, so in sunlight, a golden dragon seems to surge forth from the forest. Thus it was named 'Huanglong Valley' (Yellow Dragon Valley).

Foo Mui Kee Restaurant

Been having lunch at this restaurant for quite a few years, today I decide to keep it in my blog. When I surf the internet about it, very surprised to find that it is listed as one of those things to do in Bangkok by Lonely Planet.

Lonely Planet review for Foo Mui Kee

Foo Mui Kee has been serving a unique mixture of Thai, Chinese and European dishes for nearly 80 years. In some cases, such as the stewed ox tongue served with rice, the boundaries between cuisines are not so distinct, although the bottle of Worcestershire sauce on each table is a giveaway of the restaurant’s Western leanings.

The Foodie

The restaurant offers a wide variety of Thai and International cuisine. One of my favorite is a crispy streaky fried pork with fish sauce (หมูสามชั้นทอดน้ำปลา).

Lang Khae

I had tasted this fruit (Lang-Khae) once many years ago, but this weekend I see it for the first time in Bangkok at the Aor-Thor-Kho (อ.ต.ก.) market near Jatujak weekend market. Selling at Baht 50 per 1 kilogram. Local Thai names are ลังแข, ลูกปุย, or ลูกตำพุก.

The scientific name of this fruit tree is Baccaurea macrophylla Muell. Arg. The tree belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. Plants in this family love a humid and high rainfall climate. Lang-khae is a native of South Thailand and Malaysia, and is found distributed in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo, and Sumatra. It is occasionally cultivated in these areas.

There is no English name recorded for this fruit tree. Gurak gatuk (Kalimantan), bua tampoi (Sumatra) (Indonesia); tampoi, tampul, tempuni (Peninsular Malaysia); lang-khae (Thailand in general), however, there are other local names such as lam-khae (Pattani), and luk pui (Phang-nga).

The fruit is eaten as fresh fruit. The taste of the flesh is sweet with some sourness, which can attract a wide range of consumers. During the harvesting season, one can find lang-khae fruits in supermarkets of big cities in Thailand as well as in local markets in some southern provinces such as Phang-nga, Phuket and Hat Yai (Songkhla province). It is also popular among the Chinese, Malaysians and Indonesians.

Sri Racha, Chonburi

After breakfast we leave the island to have lunch at Jae Aaew (เจ๊แอ๋ว)'s place, Sri Racha. Although many websites recommend the place, I myself would rather not recommend since the food is too sweet.

Luckily that we end our trip at the small but lovely bakery and cafe offering yummy and delicious cakes.

All in all it is a very happy weekend spending time with good friends.

Klongsuan Market and Si Chang Island

Pe Paew has kindly arranged an annually get-together for the travel lover gang for a short trip to “Si Chang” Island. 22 members can join this meeting. Our first stop is at Klong Suan Market, a canal-side shop house community. It lines at the banks of Prawet Burirom canal at Tambon Theppharat in Chachoengsao and Tambon Klong Suan in Samut Prakan. The charming of this 100-year-old market is its maintaining resident's traditional way of life untouched by the travel of time. It is the every day market for local resident, not just the weekend market for tourists.

How to get there:

Having breakfast at the market, then we go straight to “เกาะลอย” pier to buy a boat ticket to Si Chang Island.

Koh Si Chang, or Sichang Island, has a special place in the history of the Chakri dynasty. Three former kings vacationed there. King Mongkut, or Rama IV, admired the island for its fresh and clean air, which he believed contributed to the long lives of the people who lived there. The face of Sichang Island changed considerably during the reign of King Rama V as it became a busy port and one of the gateways to Siam. After Prince Vajiravudh (who would later take the throne as King Rama VI) stayed on the island for over eight months to recover from an illness, Sichang became the most popular place for convalescence for members of the royal family.

Getting There :
Located off the coast of the fishing town of Sri Racha, Chonburi province, this island has many sites of historical value. Boats leave from the pier near Koh Loy, Sri Racha and take 45 minutes to reach the island.
Where to Stay :
Accommodation on the island is limited, as is the water supply. There is no natural source of water on the island, so the inhabitants reply on rain water stored in large cisterns that were built when the island was developed about a century ago.

Visiting the Saan Chao Pho Khao Yai or a Shrine of the Father Spirit of the Great Hill.
This place went back to the days when junks from Ming China anchored in the sheltered water on the east side of the island. Founded around a cave from which seafarers saw a magic light shining into the night, around Chinese New Year the shrine draws tens of thousands of mainly Chinese supplicants from as far away as Jakarta and Beijing.

We then visit the Rama V palace.

The royal summer residences took place on 1892 when Prince Chudadhuj Daradilok was born to Queen Sri Bajarindra on July 5, 1892, at Chudadhuj Throne Hall on the island, and a traditional ceremony was held a month later to bless the new-born prince, and the Sichang summer palace was bestowed with the name Chudadhuj Palace.

The summer palace compound boasted four mansions, 14 halls and a pavilion surrounded by many ponds, brooks, cliffs and caves. The palace's architecture reflected the social and political climate of the time it was built. The Western influence is evident.

Regrettably, it was the rise of Western colonialism that forced the royal family to leave the island. The Franco-Siamese conflict regarding sovereignty over neighbouring Laos led to aggression by French gunships which blockaded the Chao Phraya River. The French also stationed their troops along the eastern coast of Siam, and Sichang Island was no longer considered safe for royal sojourns.

Though the Franco-Siamese treaty relinquishing land on the left bank of the Mekong River to the French was signed in 1893, the French did not pull out their troops until a decade later. The palace was left vacant and some mansions under construction in the compound were left unfinished.

In 1901, however, King Chulalongkorn realised that Munthat Rattanarot Mansion was still not finished, and he ordered the golden teakwood building to be dismantled and brought to Bangkok. By royal decree, the mansion was brought to Dusit Palace and rebuilt as the renowned Vimanmek Mansion.

The octagon stone base where the original mansion once stood can still be seen at the compound of the Chudhadhuj Palace on Sichang Island.

Since it is raining all afternoon, we spend our time catch up each other's well-being.

Steamed crab

Thank you Pe Norm for the delicious steamed crab from "Ang-Si-La" Seafood restaurant ka.

Chai Roj

My brother hosts lunch for my mom at Chai Roj eatery. It is a small shop house opposite Santirat School. The menu is quite limit but the food tastes good. It was long time ago that I first had lunch at this place. But since there is no parking space available, I decided to forgo this place. Considering that all the dishes are delicious, taking a taxi is not a bad idea.
